The Spanish Island of Tenerife is the langest of the seven Canary Islands, situated just of the coast of west Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Tenerife has a land mas of 2034.38 square Kilometers, and a population of 886,000 inhabitants, making it the highest populated Canary Island.
The Capital
The Capital of the island is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, famous for the grand Auditorium which is one of the Cities great land marks. The city has a cosmopolitan feel to it and is a melting pot of diverse cultures.
The Last Volcanic eruption The last volcanic eruptions came from the Chinyero volcano in 1909 in the county of Santiago del Teide , leaving the sculptured rugged landscape you see today.
Climate
“The Island Of Eternal Spring” close to the Sahara Desert the island enjoys a warm all year round climate with an average of 22° – 24°C in the winter and 26° – 28°C in the summer and sunshine practically all year round. The winters are mild and never get really cold making it an ideal destination for winter holidays, in contrast the hottest summer months never reach really high temperatures as do many of the Greek Islands of the Mediterranean.

World Famous Carnival of Santa Cruz
The most important festival of Tenerife is the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife witch lasts for 10 days and nights through to the early hours. Famous on an international level it has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest. The carnival is celebrated in the north and south of the island, but is largest in scope in the capital city of Santa Cruz. Once the Queen of the festival is elected, the first part of the carnival ends, and thereafter begins the actual street carnival, in which large numbers of people gather in the center of Santa Cruz. The carnival includes bands of street musicians, groups of minstrels , masquerades and various associations.

Island Transpotation
There are two airports on the island, Reina Sofia in the South and Los Roeas airport in the North. Tenerife is the Canary island which annually receives more passengers due to tourism than the other Islands which is why it is easy to find cheaper direct flights with major British Airports. Tenerife also has two ports one at Santa Cruz de Tenerife with passenger services to the mainland port of Cádiz and the other of Los Cristianos with services to the other Canary Islands. There is also an extensive bus system throughout the Island connecting all of the major towns and in 2007 a new tramway was built that connects the cities of Santa Cruz and La Laguna with the suburb of Taco.

Fresh Fish And Meats
The Island enjoys an abundance of fresh sea fish of various kinds, sea bream, (sama) Combtooth blennies, (viejas) Tuna, Atlantic Mackerels and sardine as well as king prawns. Usually coked simply fried on the plancha or “a la sal” baked in sea salt. These dishes are traditionally accompanied with Canarian potatoes, “mojo canaria” and salad.
Fresh Meats include marinated pork on skewers, often eaten at the festivals. local goat and rabbit, and of course, pork beef and poultry. The island also produces an abundance of hand made cheeses, they come soft, cured and smoked. They are mainly goats cheeses but you can also find cheese made from sheep and cows milk.
Local Wines
There are lots of wine growing in the Canary Islands especially in Tenerife. It dates back to the conquest, when the settlers brought different vines to plant. In the 16th and 17th centuries, wine production played a very important role in the economy, and many families relied heavenly on the business. The malvasía canary was once considered the best wine of Tenerife and at the time one of the most desired wines in the world, it was shipped to all the major warehouses of Europe and America.
